Qigong is a powerful form of internal exercise and meditation. The term Qigong can be understood in English as "energy work" or the skill of working with one's vital essence through movement, breath, and internal focus. Qigong is an essential aspect of internal martial arts training such as T'ai Chi Ch'uan or Ba Gua Zhang -- and also an excellent health and spiritual cultivation practice on its own. The style of Qigong that I teach is called Silk Reeling Spiral Power Qigong and is a series of spiraling exercises derived from Chen Style T'ai Chi Ch'uan. This system was inspired originally by renowned Master Chen Fa Ke, who discovered the coiling effortless power within T'ai Chi movement, and passed this knowledge on to his student, Master Feng Zhiqiang who developed the Hunyuan Silk Reeling Spiral Power Exercises. The term Hunyuan refers to the primordial cosmos -- basically, the rotation of the celestial, and the Hunyuan spiraling practices can be seen as a method to connect to and unite with this celestial/primordial Qi through physical, energetic and spiritual integration with this cosmic essence.
The Silk Reeling Exercises connect the whole body from the feet to the head through the use of the spiraling movements and the principles of T'ai Chi Ch'uan. The spiraling actions open the joints, energetic pathways, and relax tension in the muscles to increase the flow of Qi in the body. Through these moving practices, meditation, and mind-directed energy work, we can achieve improved health, mental clarity, and a greater sense of spiritual connection.
Qigong is a nourishing internal energy practice that allows us to shed rigidity, and create space for the development and growth of our natural spirit, or "true self." At it's core I see Qigong as a transformational practice that integrates and aligns body, mind and spirit in a gentle, naturally healing manner. Learning to connect to our Qi through movement is a tremendous assistant in staying grounded, and taking actions or non-action in our daily lives with consciousness and clarity.
In addition to the Silk Reeling Exercises, Qigong classes also include standing meditation and Ba Gua Zhang circle walking meditation. Taoist cosmology, philosophy, theory and astrology are also discussed and incorporated into the training.
I invite anyone to try and feel the wonderful, healing, and life giving benefits of this practice. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
I am a dedicated student an assistant instructor to Master Frank J. Paolillo, founder of the Tao Institute, where I also hold classes and teach private lessons. I have been studying martial arts since 2001 and teaching since 2006. Master Paolillo's work has been a tremendous inspiration to me and I am honored to be able to share his creative spirit and training methods with others through my class offerings. This work is the core of my own spiritual life and the inspiration behind all of my offerings at MelaLuna Celestial Arts.
