Internal Martial Arts Overview

As a full-time dedicated student and assistant instructor to Master Frank Paolillo of the Tao Institute, I have the honor to teach several entry level classes as a part of the Tao Institute program.

Tao Institute specializes in Chinese Internal Martial Arts, Taoist meditation, philosophy & energy cultivation.  We have an excellent, diverse martial curriculum that includes training in Traditional Chen Style T'ai Chi Ch'uan, Baguazhang, Praying Mantis Kung Fu & Shandong weapons, as well as Sifu's unique Tao Style, which he has personally developed.

Chinese Internal Martial Arts have been systematically developed for mind, body & spirit training.  Utilizing meditation and internal energy work exercises, practitioners can naturally improve health, overall vitality, intuition, sensitivity, as well as develop a deeper connection with self and universal principles.

The above listed classes contain basic foundation work for Internal Martial Arts training and are excellent for beginners.  Please continue reading for individual class descriptions, and feel free to contact me with any questions.

Please visit the Tao Institute website for the complete school curriculum.

Class Descriptions

Silk Reeling Spiral Power Qi Gong

Wednesdays 12:00PM-1:15PM

Silk Reeling Spiral Power Qi Gong is a powerful set of exercises derived from Chen Style T'ai Chi Ch'uan, and is the foundation practice for Tao Institute.  The Silk Reeling Exercises connect the whole body from the feet to the head through the use of the spiraling movements and the principles of T'ai Chi Ch'uan.  The spiraling actions open the joints, energetic pathways, and relax tension in the muscles to increase the flow of Qi, or vital energy, in the body.  Through these moving practices, meditation, and mind-directed energy work, we can achieve improved health, mental clarity, and a greater sense of spiritual connection.

Qigong classes include Silk Reeling exercises, standing meditation and Baguazhang circle walking meditation.  Taoist cosmology, philosophy, and theory is also incorporated into the training.

Drop ins are welcome for this class.

Chen Style T'ai Chi Ch’uan

Wednesdays 5:15PM-6:30PM

The Chen Style Tai Chi Ch’uan class is an entry level introduction to Tai Chi and Tao philosophy that focuses primarily on the fundamentals of Tai Chi movement for the purposes of health and cultivation.  The Chen Style Tai Chi Ch’uan class covers Silk Reeling Spiral Power Qigong, 3 basic standing meditation postures, stance training, and the first section of the Chen Style Tai Chi form.  This class is excellent for beginning students who wish to eventually learn the long form or progress into other classes in the Tao Institute curriculum, as well as those who prefer to work with a shorter, simpler framework.

Internal Praying Mantis Kung Fu

Mondays 5:15PM-6:30PM

Praying Mantis Kung Fu is an essential part of Tao Institute foundation training and lineage.  In this class we will cover basic Short Silk Reeling Spiral Power Qigong, standing meditation, stance training and a very rare internal Soft Praying Mantis form.  This form is performed slow and soft like Tai Chi but is more physically rigorous and contains traditional Kung Fu movements.  The Soft Praying Mantis form allows for the development of Tai Chi principles and internal strength, much like Tai Chi but with the style of Kung Fu.

Private Lessons

Private training is available for all students interested in the study of Chen Style T'ai Chi Ch'uan, the Chen Tai Chi Silk Reeling Exercises, basic Baguazhang and Praying Mantis Kung Fu on a one-to-one basis.  This is an excellent option for anyone who is unable to attend group classes at the Tao Institute, needs to work at an individualized pace, or simply needs supplemental training.  Private lessons are a really good opportunity to get a closer and deeper look at the practices, discuss any questions or concerns, as well as receive specific one-on-one instruction on any classroom material.  It is also a good setting for those who come to Tai Chi and Qigong work with the intent of self healing, but are not yet ready to join group training.  In lessons, I will work with you on any area of your interest and help fine tune your movement and energetics to help you improve.  Please contact me to discuss scheduling.  :)
